The movement

Prescription medication addiction is an escalating public health issue. It is killing hundreds of Australians and affecting thousands.

In response, ScriptWise will promote a dedicated national conversation on prescription medication addiction, which will be a culmination of expertise in primary care, specialist medicine, mental health and addiction treatment. We must give ‘accidental addicts’ and their families the support they need.

From 1991 - 2010

Directline, A Telephone counselling service, now receives almost three times as many calls about prescription opioids as it does about heroin.

Where is the public outrage?

Prescription benzodiazepines and opioids analgesics have an important therapeutic role. However, they are highly addictive, even when taken in accordance with a doctor’s instructions.

Australia has a hidden population of individuals who have become dependent on certain medicines. Addiction is an illness. It is paralysing. It destroys families. Yet, addiction to prescription medications are often concealed. It is time to acknowledge this hidden epidemic.

Just because a medication is obtained ‘legally’ or with a prescription, does not mean it is safe.

Overdose deaths are increasing, yet our doctors do not have the tools to access patient medication history. This is a fundamental shortcoming in our health system.

ScriptWise is joining an increasing body of experts in raising awareness around addiction to prescription medications and call for the implementation of Real-Time Prescription Monitoring.

We need this system to save lives and alleviate prescription medication misuse.

Put your name behind the change

ScriptWise seeks the introduction of a Real-Time Prescription Monitoring (RTPM) system as the first step to combatting doctor shopping. Doctors need the appropriate technology to access patient prescription history.

Victorian Coroners and public health authorities have made repeated calls for a RTPM to reduce the harms and deaths associated with doctor shopping.

The Government can no longer ignore these calls for a solution. Please add your voice to the movement.
